Steiner Ranch Commute to Downtown

November 16th, 2007 · 12 Comments

In a recent Statesman article, Ben Wear drove from near Rick Perry’s home in Barton Creek Estates to the State Capitol at 12th and Congress. He said it took him 31 minutes to go 11.2 miles. I have a 20 mile commute from my house to just south of downtown where I work. Here is the breakdown of my commute depending when I leave.

Leave at 7:00AM: 35 minutes
Leave at 7:30AM to 8:40AM: one hour
8:40 to 9:10: 35 minutes
9:10 and later: 25 to 30 minutes

Leave a comment about how long your commute is and where you are going to work. It would be interesting to see where people are going to work and how long it takes. Also any shortcuts you use to get to work would be interesting to know for other readers.

One trick that I use when I hear on the radio that there is a closure between City Park Road and River Place Blvd on 2222 is to cut through River Place and come out through the toney Westminster Glen onto City Park Road.

John Simpson Park to Oak Knoll and 183. About 12 miles usually 30 minutes with a 7.00 AM departure.

If I miss getting ahead of SRE, then I just wait until after the school zone is open again and its back to 30 minutes.

Valley at Eastridge to downtown (Congress Ave) — usually about 45 minutes, though it’s shorter when school is not in session. I agree that it varies depending on the time I leave — if I leave early or late, it is shorter. The 7:30-8:30 time frame is pretty crowded.

To 360 just north of Lakewood – very dependent on time I leave, if it’s before 7:05 or after 8:45 it’s only 20 minutes… otherwise can be 35 to 40. The “shortcut” through City Park helps a lot when there’s an accident on 2222.

The commute in the evening is worse, once the proverbial accident happens on MoPac, 360 get’s clogged, leaving the round about way of SouthWest Parkway up through Lakeway if you want to keep moving, however spend just as much time in the car.

Just wait till they finish the new Marriot going up at 620 / 2222 with all the new retail / apartments / ect. . .West Austin’s road infrastructures can’t grow due to the geography, your only hope is to be able to work from home.

Leave at ~6:30, and go to I H 35S at Yager Ln. 19.6 miles in about 35 minutes. Leave at ~7:15am and it takes between 50-60 minutes.

    The Headlands to Round Rock – I-35 & 45
    Going:
    7:00 to 7:15 – 25-30 minutes
    7:15 to 8:15 – 45 minutes
    8:15 or later – 35 minutes

Coming home is usually about 30 – 35 minutes, but I’ve made it in as few as 25.

Rio Mesa -> N. Burnett (IBM)
I usually leave about 8, and it takes 35 mins. More when the local Austinites start playing bumper cars ;)

Btw – like the new blog format

To 35/Ben White, takes me 35 mins leaving at 6:30 am. On the way home around 5:30 pm, takes me an avg of 50 mins going either 360-2222-620 or 71-620.

Curious…we’re thinking about moving to steiner ranch. My husband commutes to east 6th st. Mapquest/google maps approximate this to be 32-39 minutes. I saw the earlier blogs above from 2007-early 08 timeframe. Is this still accurate at least for the morning timeframe (assume leave for work at 7 am) ? What’s an estimated return time at 5 pm ish? Thanks.
