Hill Country Pasta Review

May 5th, 2008 · 6 Comments

I found a deal online for Hill Country Pasta House at restaurant.com. You can get a 25 dollar dining certificate for 10 bucks, and at the end of the month they always have coupon codes that reduce it further. I got two certificates for six bucks total. I will inform you when it happens again.

So I heard good things about HCP from the comments, so we decided to check it out. My wife ordered one of the specials, seafood in cajun cream sauce. She loved the dish, it came with a salad and the meal. She liked the portions and the large amount of seafood that came with it. I ordered a pizza and was somewhat disappointed as it was “too cheesy”. It was the Serrano pizza but could not really taste any spice in it. I should have said less cheese. I like the Lakeside pizza’s better. I also liked the ambiance and wait staff, who were helpful in helping my wife pick a wine selection and in general. I would recommend going there to anyone for looking a few notches above Johnny Carino’s and that type of fare. We want to check out Siena next in our Italian restaurant tour.

I don’t like to complain about restaurants but I don’t like the Pasta House. The food doesn’t seem to have much flavor. The Pizza was just ok for me. I really like the lakeside pizza much better.

I also have ordered the fettucini with chicken and the chicken is very bland.

I have been to the HCPH a total of 5 times and each time I wonder why I come back.

The Smoked Chicken Fettuccine is really good, in my opinion. So are their mozzarella sticks. We always ask for extra bread and oil because they always give us fresh bread and a lot of oil. We usually do take out from HCPH, it’s been a while since we actually ate in the restaurant. They make take out really easy. They bring it to your car, you never have to get out of the car.

I am happy with HCPH. For what it is, a reasonably-priced, kid-friendly, Italian restaurant, I think it’s great. I have never tried the pizza, but I have been happy with their other dishes.

A few years ago we really enjoyed going there, but after a few episodes of exceptionally bad service, we haven’t gone back. I don’t care how busy you are, if it takes 15+ minutes to get a basket of stale bread tossed on your table with a grunt and no drink orders taken, and blown off by the server 2-3 times, it’s simply unacceptable.

I’ve dinned there several times over the last 5 years, when we started going it was good, several items well worth coming back such as there now removed Lake Travis Steak (sauce topping was fantastic) then they went into a slow decline when the original owner gave it to his brother to run, since then it’s never really been the same. The bread and dipping sauce are good, ranch dressing on the salad is refreshing, but otherwise it’s just regular ol’ pasta….not much of a step up from Stouffers….Smoked Chicken Fettuccine is the only unique item on the menu left.

Nothing but a bunch of over priced pasta…and its strange becuase you go in with such high expectations and the food does nothing, I can’t even remember what was wrong with it because it was so bland or the flavors just didn’t exist. The soon to be defunct Quinlan Park Grill offers more of a reaction for half the price…speaking of which why can’t they make anything work there, location is great, patio is fine….and its not like the owners haven’t been in the local resturant business for several decades?
