People looking to move out of Steiner… according to the Statesman

July 22nd, 2008 · 9 Comments

I read this link this weekend and wondered what people thought. It seems like a random thing to throw in one neighborhood in all of Austin as the one with a long commute time to Austin.

The attic isn’t finished, but it could be converted into an additional living space. In all, the house is just less than 3,400 square feet, according to tax records.

Most of the people looking at the house have been families who live in Steiner Ranch or other subdivisions with long commute times to Austin, said Kay Keesee, the agent with the listing.

“People have been coming back to the center of Austin and looking for the kind of space that they have in suburban houses,” said Keesee. “And it is rare to have this kind of space in move-in condition in the central part of town.”

The asking price is $949,000.

What do you think? Are people really looking to move out of Steiner Ranch because of the long commute with high gas prices?

I know we have looked at homes closer to town to try to cut back on our commute time. During the summer the commute back and forth is very doable, however when school is in session, it can take over an hour to get home in the evenings.

Sure gas prices are high but I think that people who appreciate the ammenities of Steiner are not going to move closer to the city to save a little money on gas. Especially when they can just get a more fuel efficient car.

Old houses have great character, but I like newer construction with more modern design. Besides, I never wake up wondering what’s going to break today. :) As far as driving, my husband telecommutes, and it doesn’t get better than that. I would like to see more employers taking steps to help ease commute stress on employees, such as more flexible work hours and more telecommuting options.

I used to live in West Houston (Katy) and had to commute to downtown Houston and sometimes to Greenspoint (North Houston). The commute time could range from 1.5 to 2.5 hours EACH way. The commute and traffic to anywhere in Austin at any time of the day is nothing.

My wife and I came from the D.C. area and I agree that traffic “problems” around here are nothing compared to larger metropolitan areas. However, congestion is increasing (drive on 360 between 2222 and 183 during rush hour), and as more and more people move into the Austin area, things are only going to get worse. What I find most annoying is the road design and planning. I work on Bee Caves road and Cuernavaca and I have to drive 19 miles to get to work. If there was even a foot bridge over Lake Austin I could ride my bike.

I don’t think a lot of people are leaving Steiner Ranch. Our neighbors and I actually joke that no one every leaves – they just buy a bigger house in Steiner.

Like the others said, Austin traffic is really not that bad when compared with larger cities like Houston. And I think the ammenities and schools will continue to make Steiner popular.

And did anyone else wonder if somebody willing to spend just under a million dollars on a house of less than 3400 sq ft.–which would sell for less than half that in Steiner, incidentally–would really be looking to save at the very most $3000/year on gas?? By my calculations, the difference in mortgage would be about eight times that amount. And while time is money, what good is getting home to your kids sooner if you can’t enjoy a nice (and safe) walk with them to see spectacular scenery, or to visit a fantastic pool (also with spectacular scenery)!? But then again, to each his (or her) own. I’ll believe the mass exodus from Steiner when I see it!

I love it here and would never move in town for my husbands commute. Nor would he. We moved here to be out with nature and close to schools, and great families. The only people I see moving are ones moving out of state to find new jobs. I do miss the character of individual homes but don’t miss my old neighboors ugly paint choices.

I make the drive downtown and back every day, and though it’s not fun, I agree that it’s better than Houston or Dallas (grew up in Houston, worked in Dallas). At least the scenery is nice along 2222
