Life for Manish – Drive

September 26th, 2008 · 9 Comments

UPDATE: Putting on the front page.

Got this from Tom… I just sent an email to them.

Save a life now!  Call Laurence Gantala, your neighbor at Steiner Ranch  at 512-964-4597 or email us a lifeformanish@yahoo.com to RSVP and register for a bone marrow donation at the Towne Square Community Center in Steiner Ranch on Saturday, September 27th between 5:00-8:00pm.
Manish Bhardwaj, a 34 year old Design Engineer at Free Scale Semi conductor, and father of a 5 year old daughter and a 1 year old son was recently diagnosed with AML form of Leukemia. The only way to save his life is to find a bone marrow match. TIME IS CRITICAL! YOU CAN HELP! AND HERE IS HOW …

We are organizing this drive to sign up as many POTENTIAL donors as possible. The registration process is extremely simple:

1. Test: (only a Q-tip rubbed inside your cheeks)Very simple and absolutely no needles involved! All you have to do is to fill out a form (please bring your driver’s license) and give a sample of your saliva. It will take 10 minutes of your personal time but you could actually save a life.
2. Donation: (the process is as simple as a blood donation) In case you are later identified as a match, understand that the transplant is completely a NON-SURGICAL process for both you and Manish and the complete cost will be covered by Manish’s insurance.
Thank you in advance for giving us a few minutes of your time! His young family and others like him will be eternally grateful for your selfless efforts. Please do forward this message to generous people like yourself. Questions? Please check our website www.lifeformanish.com for answers.
The Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas appreciates your donations.
Sincerely,

Laurence Gantala

The website says that the test is free for South Asians. Is there a charge to be tested if you’re not?

I registered myself through the Bone & Tissue Center a number of years ago, and I remeber there being a fee that covers the scientific testing required to type your marrow.

Got this from one of the organizers.

I visited your web site, there was one question about the cost of the drive, well it is free, however we are collecting small donations to off set the cost of the kit. The kit is $52/-, however, even a $5/- donation would off set the total cost for us and for the Blood and Tissue center of Central Texas.

If you have questions, I would suggest contacting Laurence Gantala at the email address or phone number listed above. She is organizing the Steiner Ranch drive and should be able to answer most questions.

This is a tragic case that needs immediate involvement from the community. Please support the cause if you can.

I was just poking around the HOA website and the Life for Mannish Drive article only had 209 hits; right behind the info on the dog obedience class.

This is a 34 year old father of 2 and he needs our help.

If it turns out that you are not a match for Mannish, I understand that your sample results will be on file with the Central Texas Blood and Tissue Center. You could be a match for someone else in a similarly dire situation.

The cost is free if you attend the drive. Normally there is a $56 charge to test.

Please show your support and get involved.

This could be your chance to save a life.

I emailed Laurence and ask him the donor process and he gave me this link. Please take a look.

Sadly, Manish lost his battle on Thursday, November 6th. Updated information is on his website http://www.lifeformanish.com/

I learned through someone who knew Manish that they did actually find 2 matches via his marrow drives, but he was too sick at that point to receive the transplant.

My prayers go out to his family on their unimaginable loss.

Thanks for posting that. When I went up to have my cheek swabbed, I was surprised at how many people were there willing to donate. I don’t know why I was surprised – Steiner Ranch is such an awesome neighborhood of caring people. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing. Hopefully the drive will help others by getting potential donors in the system. My prayers go out to the family.
