Delicato Closed

July 22nd, 2009 · 19 Comments

A couple of people sent me the information that Delicato closed. I guess business was not doing well. I guess they had some early start-up glitches that they could not overcome.

Sad to hear. Hope they can make another go of it – by the end they had a great mix of food and seemed to be busy all the time. I guess not.

There’s a ton of potential there, though the “Creamery” angle seemed a bit too narrow given the wide variety of foods. The gelato should be a minor sideline. We loved the pizzas, empenadas, arepas and fondu… and espresso drinks. Perhaps more of a push with a Venezuelan theme? I hope they find a way to resurrect the business.

We’re so disappointed… getting their chicken/avocado arepas there for weeknight quick dinners was a routine in our house! I will miss the wonderful fondue, pizzas, etc… I always wonder if people didn’t know how much great food was available there?

I truly hope they can make it back, perhaps with more food focus as the poster above suggested. Oh, and – their wine prices were unbeatable!!

We will really miss Fil and his lovely wife.

The news was a total bummer. They had the best coffee in Steiner and empanadas!! We need more places like that here in Steiner – coffee, pastries – YUM!

Sad to see them go as well. It was a great addition to Steiner Ranch.

I have to wonder why so many good things don’t seem to fly here in Steiner. First Tutto Gusto, its replacement, now Delicato. Let’s face it, we don’t have many choices here, so these businesses should have a pretty captive audience! Are they not marketing properly? Or is it something else? I’m worried it will discourage other restaurants from opening in Steiner, when we certainly could stand a few more.

Many people complained about the level of service at Tutto Gusto. You can look through previous comments on this site to get an idea of why they folded.

Fion and Lakeside Pizza thrive as above-average dining options, and it appears Thai Harmony has what it takes to hold down that corner spot. I don’t think Delicato’s closing will discourage new business.

I think the problem with Delicato was that it lacked an identity. Was it a coffee shop, gelato shop, fondue restaurant, sandwich place, pizza place, pastry shop, restaurant, etc.? I think a lot of people didn’t know what they were or what they served. It’s almost as though they were all over the map with what they did.

I did not know they served all of those food options. I thought it was just paninis, coffee, adn gelato. One thing I heard over and over was that it was too s…l…o….w…

Bummer. I wish I had known they had good food.

Thai Harmony? I wish them well, but do you ever see more than 5 cars parked there?

  • 11 Michelle // Jul 29, 2009 at 1:56 pm

We always get takeout at Thai Harmony. I think that’s what most people do but I could be wrong.

If that’s the case, it’s a problem in the long run. Waiters don’t get tips, people don’t buy alcohol (where the real margins are), people don’t order an appetizer while they are waiting, etc. A restaurant in a space that size can’t make it on takeout — the overhead is too high. The NNN charges alone for that center are very high.

We need a doughnut shop but need to find someone willing to wake up at 1 am to make the doughnuts!

I am also so sad they closed. I went there quite often. I have only lived here a little more than a year and it has been crazy that there are not more restaurants close. We need a good burger place and I think a car wash would do really well here too! I hate driving so far to get my car detailed. I agree on the donut shop idea-I think a Einstein Bagels would do great at 4 points!

So so sad to see Delicato closed. We tried to eat there 1-2 times a week to support them. We really enjoyed their pizza (better than laskeside) the panini’s, and the fondue.

    We Need a Mexican restaurant!

What a shame – a good little cafe in Steiner – with very good food and exception coffee. I guess it was too diverse for the local population to be successful in these more difficult times.

    Dear outside view:

Yes, you are right. We are all unsophisticated, cheap beer-swilling, tv dinner-eating, backwoods trash here in Steiner. Maybe that explains why Fion and the Steiner Steakhouse are doing so well. Delicato closed because it couldn’t sustain a high enough volume to pay high rent, partially because it tried to be too many things instead of focusing. We’ll miss it, but it’s not an indictment on the population.

We also loved Delicato, as there was no wait, we would go there on weekday evenings — and get reasonably priced very good, satisfying food. I also thought they were doing ok, not sure what happened.

Our family has since relocated to Laguna Beach from Steiner, but I can say I was SO SAD when I heard this :(
We’re hoping to come back in a few years, and to not have Filinto and crew there with their coffee makes me so bummed out.
Where to get coffee now? Cups & Cones was decent, I guess. Fion needs a coffee stand outside ;)
