Protest Your Property Taxes

Property taxes are a significant source of revenue for local governments, including Travis County. These taxes are calculated based on the “value” of your property, which is determined by the county appraiser’s office.  Keep in mind that they are not supposed to have access to actual sold data, so these numbers are rarely an accurate reflection of “market value.”

You should have already received a notice in the mail letting your know both your appraised and assessed values for 2023. If you haven’t received it yet, visit www.TravisCad.org and search by your name or property address.

I recommend fighting this value every year as it costs nothing and will keep your value lower over time. I did this many years by myself but now I find I get a better result (and it’s a better use of my time) to use a service. I’ve used several of the local companies and prefer Five Stone – not because they are Steiner owned, but it’s definitely a plus!

If you prefer to do it yourself, Here is a link to the TCAD website where you can find all of the info to file – just make sure you do it before May 15!  Good Luck!
