Austin is leading the way as the Southwest has become the new frontier for young Americans.
The region offers the widest range of opportunities for men and women getting started in their careers, according to a new On Numbers report from American City Business Journals. Researches compiled the rankings from various U.S. Census Bureau data.
Austin led the country with the highest proportion of residents between 18-34 years old, about 29.3 percent. The city also reported a high 1.73 percent job growth rate, based on 2006 to 2011 figures. The jobless rate for 16-34 year olds is relatively low at about 10 percent. Also, 29.3 percent of young Austinites earned a bachelor’s or higher.
The listing is the latest in a growing roster of Austin “best-of” titles. Last year, Kiplinger.com also ranked Austin among best around for young people, as did Portfolio.com. Click here for a recent round up of Austin’s rankings in various indicators nationwide.
Another Southerner Houston came in at No. 2 on the recent best cities for the young list, followed in order by Washington D.C.; Raleigh, N.C.; Dallas-Fort Worth; Boston; and Oklahoma City.
The On Numbers report analyzed 65 metros with populations exceeding 800,000. The study’s 10-part formula gave superior marks to places with strong growth rates, moderate costs of living, and substantial pools of young adults who are college-educated and employed.
